Given that Hachinohe is a fishing port, you’re absolutely spoiled for choice if you enjoy eating fresh fish. However, if you’re not that daring when it comes to eating varieties of fish, Tempura is always a safe choice.

Tempura is a light, crispy batter that is very similar to the kind of batter found on fish in the UK, when ordering fish and chips. And everyone knows nearly everything tastes better with batter on it.

Tempura battered fish was actually the first Japanese dish I ever had, in Vancouver, Canada many years ago and I still remember the excellent impression it made on me with regards to Japanese food.

The Tempura I had at the restaurant Hokoruya, in downtown Hachinohe was outstanding. The building stands out for its European styled exterior so you can’t miss it. The quality of the batter was superb – remarkably light and crunchy, and there were a variety of fish and vegetables, including shrimp, cod roe and mushrooms.

I highly recommend dropping in for lunch.
