APPLE KUCHEN
“Apple kuchen” is named after a German pastry modelled after an Apple – the word “Kuchen” means “cake” in German.
The apparence of this snack is far different from any apple pie you can find in shops. The Japanese Apple Kuchen is made of “apple butter” and “soft apples” and comes in the form of a huge ball of cake.
It was one of the most distinctive looking snacks I’d come across in Aomori, with the cake being particularly notable in it’s size and weight. Apple Kuchen is big. At least big enough to fill the bellies of a family four.
The cake around the chunks of apple at the core is very thick (as seen in the above photo), and the apple inside being relatively hard (having been freeze dried).
I’d recommend slicing it in half and enjoying it with some cream. Unfrotunately, I ate it dry and in the same way you’d eat an apple (without slicing it). The result was a crumbly Apple Kuchen all over my clothes.
