Jewellery Sushi
This is a dish that’s all about presentation – the aptly named ‘jewellery sushi’ comes filled with tuna, salmon, shrimp, fish eggs, fried egg, cucumber, all diced, sliced and chopped onto a bed of rice. The end result is a dish that resembles a shiny treasure trove – and like a treasure trove, the deeper you dig in, the more treasure you find.
Marusushi is a popular sushi restaurant in the town of Sakata, the town I called home for 3 years. And as you’d expect from a port town like Sakata, one of the benefits is the delicious fresh fish. As well as serving some of the freshest, best fish you’ll find in Yamagata prefecture, Marusushi is particularly well known for it’s dish, “Houseki Chirashi”, literally translated as “Scattered Gems”.
When I eat sushi I tend to keep things simple, ordering platefuls of tuna and salmon. However, if you’re the sort of person who likes a bit more variety, there can be little doubt this is the dish to go for. It’s worth ordering once just for the presentation alone. Just be careful not to order the huge size like I did. The portion we ordered (pictured above) is a four person job to finish!
