Cake Manjuu

Today we visited one of the most famous sweet shops in Hanamaki, where we had the chance to meet an expert sweet maker.

Manjuu is a chewy rice sweet, where the rice and flour are beaten under immense pressure to give them a chewy texture (in the same way flour is beaten to make dough for bread).

And it was in this shop we tried Cake Manjuu, where the inside contains a delicious liquid feeling comprised of brown sugar and walnuts. How the liquid stays inside remains a mystery, that the Master obviously wouldn’t share.

The shop products a limited quantity of this sweet (usually about 100) and people come from far away to try this succulent snack.

I was pleasantly surprised biting into it, at the sensation of the brown syrup bursting out from within. In fact, I was enjoying it so much, I hadn’t noticed it had spilled out and stained my shirt.
