Kushiyaki is one of my favourite Japanese dishes and every time I have it I wonder why it hasn’t yet become popular in the UK. Pork, chicken and beef are skewered, covered in a fine mixture of salts and spices unique to each restaurant and then grilled under the constant supervision of the master.

It’s perfection. And yet, many Kushiyaki restaurant still fall short of the mark. Once you’ve been to a good Kushiyaki shop, you’ll be able to tell where many go wrong; tall salty, too dry, over-cooked.

Fortunately, Quinlan, a local ex-pat living in Morioka, new one of the best Kushiyaki restaurants in town – ‘Yorozu’, hidden down a side street in downtown Morioka (about 10 minutes from Morioka station).

The restaurant was themed as though it was in the showa era (typically 1950’s-1960’s).
We stuffed ourselves with tomatoes wrapped in pork, chicken thigh, asparagus wrapped in pork, mushroom, and chicken skin.

Admittedly, listing the foods that we had there makes them sound fairly dull, but I can assure you when they’re cooked right, they’re unbeatable.

Restaurant: Yorozu
