Wasabi Dango
On our journey through Iwate, I was delighted to find the picturesque city of Tono, hidden away in the mountains is famed for it’s Wasabi production. We stopped at a road side station and bought as many Wasabi-related products as we could carry including Wasabi mayonnaise, wasabi rice crackers, wasabi salad dressing – even wasabi ice cream!
But the thing that I won’t forget in a hurry was the Wasabi Dango. I would never have thought the mustardy, spicy taste of Wasabi would combine so brilliant with the sugary, chewy taste of Dango (beaten rice flour).
After eating the first one, I paused for a few moments in disbelief at how awesome it was, before quickly finishing the second and third stick. If we’d had more time I would have gone back to buy more and admittedly I regret it now.
Maybe we can make a detour through Tono on the way back…
