Sanriku Scallops, Hotate
The Sanriku coastline stretches several hundreds kilometres along Japan’s Pacific coastline, starting in Aomori, passing through Iwate and finishing in north Miyagi. The area is well regarded for it’s seafood and perhaps most prominently for it’s giant scallops.
I had the chance to try them out in Morioka at a fish restaurant where you can grill your fish over a bbq, which is something I’d never tried in Japan. Fortunately the staff were on hand to show me how long to cook the scallops for (after one initial failed attempt).
The scallop inside the shell was absolutely huge and after three of the giant scallops I was full!
