Aomori is a region famed for it’s apples and as soon as you set foot into one of the prefecture’s shops, you’ll find store shelves lined with numerous apple related products, from apple ciders and apple jams, to apple pies and apple chocolate.

However, the confectionary that caught my eye was Apple Mochi. Mochi is rice cake formed from rice that’s been beaten under great pressure and turned into a paste. Usually when eating mochi it comes in a thick cake-like shape, but the apple mochi were slices unusually thin with the colour of the thick apple jam inside visible due to the thinness.

I purchased a box of containing eight with the plan of sharing them with a friend – suffice to say, after biting in to the soft, powdery mochi and experiencing the taste of the apple jam oozing out from within, I was addicted.

Mochi has a pleasantly soft texture, but is often relatively flavourless. The apple jam made up for that with it’s sharp, sweetness and left a taste in my mouth after each piece that left me wanting more.

After an hour only two pieces remained and my friend wasn’t particularly pleased with me.
