APPLE CURRY
Whilst Hirosaki feels a bit like being on the edge of the world, in Tohoku’s far flung north, surprisingly it was once home to Japan’s most famous business man, Kenichi Fujita, back in the early 20th centry.
To celebrate his hometown Kenichi created a beautiful Japanese garden (the second largest in Tohoku), with 21,800 square meters of ponds, streams, bridges and waterfalls, overlooking the stunning Mount Iwaki.
Within the Fujita Memorial Garden is a European styled house, that looks like something out of a Harry Potter movie, where you can enjoy coffee, cakes and of course, apple curry. (I say of course, as it shouldn’t be surprising that the dish contained apples – Hirosaki is the land of apples after all).
From the cafe you can enjoy your apple curry, whilst looking out of the large windows into the garden – providing you can get a seat. We had to wait an hour to get in, such is the popularity of the cafe.
The apple curry was a delight to my taste buds. Contrary to preconceptions, the sweetness of the apple is so subtle
that it blends perfectly with the Japanese curry served with my rice. Japan has a huge variety of types of curry, and the one that I was served was light in taste and pleasant.
Apple curry works surprisingly well – don’t hesitate to try it if you’re in town.
