Oden
In Morioka city the owner of the restaurant “Konsaiya”, Tanaka Koichi, introduced me to several meals – but as fall is coming pretty soon I’m going to talk one in particular I ate this evening.
Oden is usually a food of the masses, purchased and enjoyed from convenience stores throughout Japan. It may be eggs, Japanese radish, or even sausages, but it’s boiled in a fish flavoured soup for three days and each item is usually sold for less than ¥100.
The shop “Konsaiya” is a something of a gourmet Oden restaurant about a 10 minute walk from Morioka station, where you’ll be greeted by a warm atmosphere consisting of Jazz music and the friendly own Tanaka Koichi (who speaks English).
Tanaka san has taken Oden to the next level, presenting it in a gourmet style that I’d never encountered. I got the simplest version of Oden which is served with a boiled egg, konjac and daikon (Japanese radish). The radish was really soft and reminded me of the taste of some European soups we drink during the winter season.
We also tried fishcakes and boiled chicken, but for me, it was the gourmet Oden that stood out and the main reason to check out Konsaiya if you’re in Morioka.
