“Genghis Khan”, Jingiskan

When I heard we were eating “Genghis Khan” for lunch, my reaction was one of confusion and surprise. I’ve never been the sort of person who likes to eat Mongolian dictator’s for lunch.

Imagine my relief then when it turned out “Genghis Khan” is in fact a grilled lamb dish, particularly popular in Iwate prefecture.

In most parts of Japan, the lamb is cooked over a conventional gas fire grill, but in Iwate prefecture, there’s a far more convenient method. The grill is placed over a metal bucket, meaning the locals can easily take their Lamb bbq with them up to the mountains or to wherever their hearts desire.

The Lamb is cut into thin slices, and draped over a thick metal grill covering the bucket, which is angled so the juices of the meat, which is placed in the elevated centre, drips down and marinates the vegetables below.

Once cooked the lamb is dipped into a sauce mixture of Soy sauce and ginger, which compliments the Lamb rather well.

So well in fact, that I was able to eat two whole portions.
