KARAMISO RAMEN
Ryuushanhai had some of the best reviews I’d ever seen for a ramen restaurant, so I as I stood in the queue for 30 minutes, I suspected it was going to be well worth the wait.
The interior of the ramen shop was unique, in that customers shared the big red tables with fellow strangers. I found myself sharing a square table with an elderly couple, who gave us a friendly nod and then sat looking somewhat awkward, not quite knowing what to say.
Fortunately the awkward silence was promptly broken, as the shop staff brought over our orders – which were all the same; Ryuushanhai’s specialty was spicy miso ramen.
As the steaming bowl was set down before me, the smell of the pork and the spicy miso paste resting on top drifted up and delighted my senses.
I promptly stirred the miso paste into the broth, giving the soup a pleasant spicy kick and turning the broth a shade of red. The noodles were distinctively curly and the braised pork uniquely seasoned with herbs, giving the ramen something of an upmarket feel to it.
The spicy miso paste really did elevate the dish from being above average, to being something truly special, leading me to drink most of the spicy soup broth down to the last drop.
