We interviewed the Natori City Earthquake Reconstruction Museum!
The Natori City Earthquake Reconstruction Museum has provided a lot of support so far with the aim of passing on the memories and lessons learned from the Great East Japan Earthquake to future generations and various parts of the world. Most importantly, fostering awareness of disaster prevention without letting the memories of the earthquake fade. They have worked with storytellers’ and local residents who are engaged in disaster prevention activities to help create a society that is resistant to the effects of natural disasters.
In addition, this facility was established for the purpose of passing on the memories and lessons learned from the Great East Japan Earthquake to posterity, fostering awareness of disaster prevention without forgetting about the disaster, and promoting interactions between citizens, reconstruction supporters and visitors.
Now, let me introduce you to the three spaces inside the facility.
Community space
In the community space that first appears as you proceed from the entrance, a large diorama model that resembles the city of Yuriage before the earthquake is displayed, and a large walking map is installed on the wall in the spacious room. You can learn about the earthquake and disaster prevention by being able to observe Yuriage before the earthquake and the newly reborn Yuriage at the same time.
Exhibition space
Next, I would like to introduce the exhibition space. Here, the history from earthquake was exhibited in a chronological format. learn about the natural disasters and disaster prevention with the major theme of disaster prevention education, and a simple hands-on experience of disaster prevention were prepared.
Theater room
Lastly, I would like to introduce a spacious theater room that can hold up to 56 people (currently, due to the influence of the coronavirus, admission is restricted to 20 people). In addition to the Truth about Tsunami section, which is a panel exhibition about the damage caused by the tsunami from the Great East Japan Earthquake, you can watch lecture videos on your monitor.
How was it?
In the future, it is expected to be used for disaster prevention education for elementary and junior highs school students, and it is also expected to contribute to the liveliness of this area along with the nearby Kawamachi Terrace Yuriage, Earthquake Memorial Park, Natori Trail Center, etc.
Ten years have passed since the disaster, and the role of passing on memories of the disaster through exchanges with citizens, various groups, and visitors, conducting disaster prevention education, and supporting the development of human resources who are responsible for disaster-resistant town development will continue to carry.
